Learn to play the Violin

By Lorrie Matthias

If you are thinking about picking up a musical instrument, violin is a good choice. Violin lessons are a wonderful introduction to the world of music. This instrument has a beautiful sound, and it works well with a variety of musical types.

Finding a good teacher is essential to having a good experience playing violin. When you begin your search, you can start with local music shops. These places usually have a few cards or flyers from local teachers, and you can begin to make calls to find out what types of teachers will work best for you.

As you are searching for teachers, be sure to ask them about their teaching style. You should look for a teacher who is able to teach you the basics of music, such as how to read it and how to put together chords, as well as teachers who are equipped to help you develop a repertoire of songs to play.

Be upfront with potential teachers about what you expect to get from your violin lessons. Some teachers have their own benchmarks for progress, and you need to make sure that your expectations are in line with what your teachers want from you.

If you want to perform for other people at a local concert, be sure to check the standards your teacher requires if he sets up student concerts. Almost all teachers plan concerts for their teachers because they like to show off the progress their students make, and you should make sure that your plans mesh with your teachers intentions.

As the time for your initial lesson nears, you need to make sure you have your violin ready to go. You may want to purchase additional supplies, such as resin for your bow. Your teacher or a salesperson at the local music store should be able to help you get the right accessories for your violin lessons.

At your first lesson, make sure you bring a notebook and a pencil. You may need to take notes on the music or on advice your teacher gives. While your teacher undoubtedly will have those items available as well, it is important that you let her know that you are prepared as well.

While you are at your lesson, remember that you are paying for a service. Music teachers have a tendency to be harsh, especially of students they think are not listening closely enough. Just keep in mind that you are paying to learn to play, and you can push your teacher to review material or to slow down if you need it.

Daily practice is important. At least half an hour per day of preparation for your violin lessons will help you to get better gradually. Practicing for half an hour daily is better than one or two longer sessions a week because you will get used to the instrument and the music more easily.

Taking violin lessons is not something you will be able to judge immediately. If you have selected a teacher carefully, then you should trust that this person will put everything together in a way that makes sense. Just give your lessons time, and you will be enjoying playing the violin before long. - 21704
